Miss Manners Archive

Many of these trends began years ago, but 2009 marks a significant leap forward both in the public consciousness and in influence. We'll start with the smartphone. The Android smart phone operating system appeared on several phones in 2009, including the Verizon Droid. Executives and technology enthusiasts have been carrying these gadgets around for several years. Devices like the iPhone, launched in 2007, have helped push the smartphone into the hands of the average consumer. But 2009 marked the year when smartphones really took off. Several events helped the smartphone gain traction in the consumer market. Apple launched the iPhone 3GS, the fastest iPhone to date. Google's Android operating system showed up in several phones across multiple cell phone carriers, including the much-hyped Motorola Droid on Verizon. And the Palm Pre, a hit at the Consumer Electronics Show in January 2009, entered the market just a few months later. Suddenly, customers on every major carrier in the United States have access to at least one cool new smartphone.
Independent filmmakers like Spike Lee often release new remastered versions of their films. Digital technology has not only allowed filmmakers and musicians to create inspiring new works of art, but it's also given audio engineers and film editors the chance to reach back and restore classic albums and movies to their original grandeur. Remastered CDs and DVDs promise consumers a crystal clear, artistically faithful reproduction of their favorite music and films. Led Zeppelin fans rush to the record store every time the band issues another "definitive" remastered collection of its pioneering rock albums of the 1960s and 70s. And companies like the Criterion Collection have created a market for painstakingly restored, high-definition DVD releases of classic, foreign and independent cinema from filmmakers like Jean-Luc Godard, Akira Kurosawa, and Spike Lee. Many listeners complain that remastering CDs, especially in the age of the MP3, is nothing but an excuse to make the music louder and overproduced.
The role vitamins play in lowering cholesterol is unclear, but they do seem to be less effective as supplements than in their natural form. See more drug pictures. A healthy, balanced diet is the only way to get all the vitamins that may lower cholesterol. Such a diet -- low in saturated fat, trans fat, and cholesterol -- plus a lifestyle that includes regular physical activity and losing excess weight, form the basis for fighting heart disease. Yet, the battle being waged against the high-cholesterol plaques in the walls of your blood vessels is a complex one. The form that vitamins and minerals take -- in food or in supplements -- seems to be an especially important factor in determining their effectiveness in promoting heart health. There's no question that your food choices can influence your risk of disease, but it's possible that a variety of other compounds in foods -- such as fiber or phytonutrients -- may act in harmony with vitamins or minerals to enhance their health effects.
And because major volcanic eruptions can have the same effect, there are some real-world data to anchor the idea. The place and time for the experiment are still to be determined, but it would be a baby step toward showing whether artificial stratospheric particles could help cool the planet the way eruptions do naturally. But the idea of using a technological fix for climate change is controversial. Talking about - let alone researching - geoengineering has long been considered taboo for fear that it would dampen efforts to fight climate change in other ways, particularly the critical work of reducing carbon emissions. That left geoengineering on the fringes of climate research. But people's attitudes may be changing, Keith says. He argues that while geoengineering by itself cannot solve the problem of climate change, it could help mitigate the damage if implemented carefully alongside emissions reductions. In 2000, Keith published an overview of geoengineering research in the Annual Review of Energy and the Environment, in which he noted that major climate assessments up until that point had largely ignored it.
Image Gallery: Sharks A great white shark, one of the most popular species with adventurers, explores the ocean off the coast of Australia. See more pictures of sharks. You can't hear a lot 60 feet (18 meters) below the surface of the ocean -- maybe just your own breathing into the scuba gear or the escape of air bubbles as they rush to the surface. You can feel your heart beating slowly as you watch fish glide past peacefully. You have let your guard down, you are relaxed and enjoying the sensation of the weight of the ocean above and around you, and the slow flow of the current deep beneath the surface. Then, out of the corner of your eye, you see a large shadow slide its way through the depths. The light down here is tricky, but there's definitely something large circling you and the other divers. You catch sight of it again, but it has multiplied into two shapes, now three.
