Updated Tibetan Mala Bead Blog

Post by FrankJScott »

How To Use Tibetan Prayer Beads. What Are Malas?
Mala mala, the Sanskrit word for the first prayer beads used for counting mantra recitations, is also known as mala. The ubiquitous mala is used in Tibetan Buddhist communities around the globe, either wrapped around the wrists or hanging from the fingers. They are often followed by the humming mantra recitations such as Om mani padme, Om tuttare and ture, or om mun maha-muniye. In Tibetan we call them trengwa. Since Tibetan Buddhist practice often involves the repetition of mantras in loud or mentally, thousands or even hundreds of thousand times, it's useful to record the number of times you pray with your rosary, as a sort of spiritual calculator. Even if the mantra isn't being recited, it can be used to quiet your mind and assist in keeping it focused. A string of 108 beads is the most sought-after kind of mala. It can be constructed from semi-precious stones or precious stones, wood, seeds or even bone. Once you have finished 100 mantra recitations, every time you move around the mala, and repeat an appropriate mantra for each one of the beads, you are considered fully. To make up any mistakes or miscounts, the extra 8 beads can be utilized to serve as "spare". One head bead can also be found, and it is larger than all other beads and is commonly called "guru bead". It serves as the beginning point of the circuit and is not part of the total 108. Some malas may have additional precious stones, such as turquoise or coral that are added at various intervals. Sometimes, these stones are added at intervals where can be counted, for instance, after 27 beads. It would result in 111 beads instead of 108, if you were to add the counter beads. A smaller mala is also made for use on the wrist, with 27 beads. It is used to perform prostrations. It is wrapped around your hand and then repeated 4 times. There are a variety of other arrangements that are possible including 21 or 22. This is acceptable as long you can count using your mala.

Types of Malas
There are a variety of varieties and styles of malas. They differ from bone and ivory to sandalwood, lapis-lazuli and crystal. Although there are many theories about what kind of mala is the best for different types of prayers, we don't think it is a big deal. We believe that most Tibetans do not make distinctions in the kinds of malas. Monks and nuns will generally utilize simple and affordable malas, like wooden malas. It is possible to use any mala you like. It is best to concentrate on your spiritual practice of prayer and reciting mantras instead of on the looks or value of your mala. How To Hold And Count Using Your Malas
As Tibetan tradition has proven, there are no rigid rules for calculating mantras and malas. Each person does things differently. There are a few common practices, but they do not affect your intention or your attitude to prayer. You're doing the right thing when you pray from your heart and make use of your mala. While the majority of sources recommend keeping your mala in one hand, certain Tibetans recommend placing it in the other. If you hold a prayer wheel and mala, it's more common for the mala to be carried in the left hand, while the prayer wheel is towards the right. Your mala can be used by starting by placing the bead closest to the "guru". You can hold the bead between your thumb and index finger, and repeat your mantra loudly or slowly. Then, you can move on to another bead by moving your thumb slowly. Next repeat the mantra. Once you reach the guru beads once more and you've completed 100 mantras. It is not necessary to count each one. In this moment, the majority of Tibetans do not cross the guru bead and instead reverse the direction by turning the mala around, beginning a new round of 100, going back to where they came from. In truth, we don't know the reason for this. It's more of a habit than anything.

Caring for your Mala
The mala you have will become more significant spiritually when you utilize it to chant mantras, carry it to sessions, and get it blessed, perhaps by your Guru. And while it is not in and of itself as holy as a statue or a piece of Buddhist text It is something that is usually treated with respect. This means you shouldn't throw it around, set it on the floor, or even add objects of everyday use to it. Tibetans wear their malas around their necks, or around the wrists. These malas are not meant to be worn as necklaces. It is able to be hung on a wall or an area that is high enough to be visible the altar even if you don't really need it. We actually keep ours in a special bookshelf beneath our altar. It's all dependent on you and your intention to treat it with care and respect while maintaining a practical, non-extreme attitude.
